Act 4

Edward:

Good morning, employees! It is almost unbelievable

that it has been a year since our last meeting.

Obviously, there has been an immense increase in

our production, exceeding our most optimistic goals.

We can now produce a Model T in an astonishing 93

minutes, instead of the 12 hours required a year ago.

(to Jacob) Yes, Jacob?

Jacob:

With all due respect, Mr. Williams, I used to

manufacture automobiles, but now I merely tighten

bolts. That’s not the same thing. The skill is now in the

machinery, not the men. I am a highly skilled worker,

and so are many others in your employment. Our

talents are not being utilized. We can think rationally,

make well-thought-out decisions, and build cars from

the ground up.

Edward:

And make careless mistakes, Jacob, which machines

don’t do. Machines are never negligent, nor do they

have to be chastised to perform at top efficiency.

Haven’t your working conditions improved? Haven’t

we constructed the assembly line so workers no longer

have to bend over or take more than one step in either

direction? The assembly line was created to make your

daily tasks easier. Haven’t we achieved that?
